Sussex wins 20th Financial Management Award

Sussex County financial management has achieved emerald status with another award for two decades of achievement.

The Chicago-based Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada awarded the county its Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 2021 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report in late July. The award is one of the most high forms of recognition for government accounting and financial reporting.

This is the 20th year in a row that Sussex County has won the association’s highest honour.

The award is recognition of Sussex County’s comprehensive annual financial report, which was judged by an impartial panel to meet the association’s high standards. The document includes the annual audit showing assets, liabilities, equity, income and expenses. It also contains information about county demographics and the local economy. This information helps those reviewing the report — such as investors — to better assess the county’s financial condition.

“We are honored and humbled once again to be recognized by our peers with this very prestigious accolade,” said Sussex County Chief Financial Officer Gina Jennings. “However, the greatest reward for our finance team is not winning awards, but maintaining the public’s trust every day. We take this role very seriously, and I believe the dividends of this commitment are reflected in honors earned by the county like this year after year.
